  • Substâncias acrescentadas intencionalmente aos géneros alimentícios para conseguir certas funções tecnológicas, como, por exemplo, colorir, adoçar ou ajudar a conservar os alimentos. Na União Europeia, todos os aditivos alimentares são identificados por um número E. Os aditivos mais comuns que figuram nos rótulos dos géneros alimentícios são antioxidantes (para evitar a deterioração causada pela oxidação), corantes, emulsionantes, estabilizantes, gelificantes e espessantes, conservantes e edulcorantes.
