  • Substanțe adăugate alimentelor în mod intenționat pentru a îndeplini anumite funcții tehnologice, de exemplu pentru a da culoare, a îndulci sau a conserva. În Uniunea Europeană, toți aditivii alimentari sunt identificați printr-un număr începând cu E. Aditivii care apar cel mai frecvent pe etichetele alimentelor sunt antioxidanții (care împiedică deterioarea prin oxidare), coloranții, emulsifianții, stabilizatorii, gelifianții și agenții de îngroșare, conservații și îndulcitorii.
