Τα πλέον κοινά πρόσθετα που εμφανίζονται σε ετικέτες τροφίμων είναι τα αντιοξειδωτικά (για την πρόληψη της βλάβης που προκαλείται από την οξείδωση), οι χρωστικές, οι γαλακτωματοποιητές, οι σταθεροποιητές, οι παράγοντες ζελατινοποίησης και οι πυκνωτικές ουσίες, τα συντηρητικά και τα γλυκαντικά.
