Anmärkning om ändringshistoria
- Via de mechanismen voor financiële steun op middellange termijn (MTFA, medium-term financial assistance) en communautaire leningen, die in de jaren 1970 werden ingevoerd, boden lidstaten elkaar wederzijds financiële steun in het geval van serieuze problemen met de betalingsbalans. In 1988 zijn deze mechanismen opgegaan in het betalingsbalansmechanisme. Sinds 2002 is deze financiële steun bedoeld voor lidstaten die de euro niet als munteenheid hebben.
