- 1980-luvun lopulla thrash metal -tyylistä kehittynyt heavy rockin alalaji, jolle ovat ominaisia äkilliset tempomuutokset, matalalle viritetyt soittimet sekä matala, mörisevä laulutyyli. Tyypillisiä edustajia ovat Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower ja varhainen Amorphis.
